Now many people believed that Karate is a Japanese art, but truthfully it is an Okinawan art which was developed during the time when Okinawa was independent from Japan. This popular well known martial art was developed in the Ryukyu Islands which is now known as Okinawa Japan, which was developed partially from indigenous fighting methods called te (手?, literally “hand”; Tii in Okinawan) and from Chinese kempo. Karate is most commonly known as a striking art that allows the practitioner to punch, kick, knee and elbow strikes with open handed techniques such as knife-hands.

Other moves like Grappling, locks, restraints, throws and vital point strikes are taught in various styles of Karate. After the events of World War II, American soldiers who occupied Okinawa as a base camp learned the martial art Karate and eventually carried their knowledge back to the states which made karate very popular in the US. Military soldiers and other civilians like:

Robert Trias, founder of the first karate school in the US. (Shuri-ryū karate),
Edward Kaloudis, (Koei-Kan karate-do)
William Dometrich (Chitō-ryū)
Ed Parker (Kenpo)
Cecil Patterson (Wadō-ryū)
Gordon Doversola (Okinawa-te)
Don Nagle (Isshin-ryū)
George Mattson (Uechi-ryū)
Paul Arel (Sankata, Kyokushin, and Kokondo)
Peter Urban (Gōjū-kai) Okinawa Japan owes a great debt to Chinese Kung fu because without the knowledge of Kung fu there would be no Okinawan Karate.

Since there were Okinawan immigrants who traveled to China to learn Chinese Martial arts and brought back what they have learned to Okinawa, many styles of Karate were developed by different masters who created their own style of fighting and are now commonly practiced around the world.
